Nicola Collins, a mother to three children, was beaten and killed by a man named Cathal O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan had rented a residence in which he assaulted Collins during a drinking session. Nicola was 38 at the time of her death, while the suspect was 44 years of age upon the day of the incident.
Collins suffered from extreme blunt force trauma that was consistent with being hit in the head several times. The investigation also found signs that Collins had been asphyxiated along with several other injuries being present along with her body.
A driver for the taxi company that drove Ms. Collins to the residence said that she was ‘well kept’ and did not have any bruises or injuries on her at the time of arrival. There is CCTV footage of the two leaving to purchase alcohol at a local supermarket the day before the incident, but her body was discovered 3 days later by emergency services.
The mother-of-three was found lying on her back naked with her legs resting on a bed and her body on the floor. O’Sullivan called the police at 3 a.m. to inform them of Ms. Collins, but before that he made 2 phone calls to a friend – one at 1:33 a.m. and the other at 2:15 a.m. that lasted more than 30 minutes.
When emergency services arrived, they found splatters of blood in the bathroom as well as the bedroom and bloodstains on Ms. Collins’ clothes. She had injuries like a broken jaw, a serious head injury, and two front teeth missing. She also received injuries to the neck, chest, breast, face, and chest.
O’Sullivan denies that he murdered Collins, saying that she lunged at him several times and he only held her in self-defense. He denies assaulting her, adding that her injury came from her slipping in the bathtub of the rental property.
